Exploring Open Business Models
Open business models use Creative Commons licenses to maximize use, distribution, and improvement of digital assets generating both social good and sustainable revenues. Open business models are based on the economics of abundance not scarcity.

This session explores answers to one of the most important questions of the digital age: "How do creators make money to sustain what they do when they are letting the world reuse their work?"

Presenters will describe a range of open business model activities.

Creative Commons HQ staff Sarah Pearson and Paul Stacey will outline their efforts to map out a global spectrum of open business models made with Creative Commons as part of their Kickstarter funded initiative to write a book on open business models.

Fátima São Simão and Teresa Nobre from the Creative Commons Portugal Affiliate will launch their CC Toolkit for Business including a poster, brochure, and video describing why businesses should consider using Creative Commons and the benefits they get from doing so.

Netherlands based Sebastiaan ter Burg will describe the efforts of the Circular Content team to gather practical knowledge from open content producers, users, and platforms. This knowledge is being compiled into a sharing manual that provides a practical guide for professionals on sharing content.

Hee-sung Do CEO of WanTreez Music, a Korean music sharing platform, and Nuno Silva from 500px, a photo sharing platform will both describe their businesses providing examples of open business models in practice.

The audience will be invited to ask questions and engage in a discussion with the whole panel of presenters.

Questions can be  submitted at https://www.sli.do/home to event code #3353.

The panel plans to explore questions like:
  • What value can Creative Commons and open provide to a business or creator?
  • How can we enhance and highlight the value proposition Creative Commons and open offers?
  • What business models does Creative Commons enable that would not otherwise be possible?
  • What are our recommendations for how others might adopt a Creative Commons open business model?
  • How will CC based open business models evolve going forward into the future?
